How the Anodizing Electrochemical Cell Works

As shown in the diagram above, anodizing relies on basic electrolysis principles:

  1. Anode (+): The aluminum part is connected to the positive terminal of a Direct Current (DC) power supply.
  2. Cathode (-): Lead, copper, or stainless steel plates are connected to the negative terminal.
  3. Electrolyte Solution: The components are submerged in an acid bath (typically sulfuric acid, H2​SO4​).
  4. Electrochemical Reaction: When DC current flows through the circuit, hydrogen is released at the cathode, while oxygen ions are drawn to the aluminum anode, reacting to form a controlled layer of aluminum oxide (Al2​O3​). 4Al+3O2​⟶2Al2​O3​

Step-by-Step Anodizing Process

  1. Cleaning & Degreasing:
    Surface Preparation.
    The aluminum profile is thoroughly cleaned using alkaline or acid degreasers to remove oil, grease, dirt, and shop dust, ensuring an even electrochemical reaction.
  2. Etching / Desmutting:
    Pre-treatment.
    The metal is immersed in a mild chemical solution to remove natural oxides and smooth out minor surface scratches, producing a uniform matte appearance.
  3. Anodizing (Anodic Oxidation):
    Electrochemical Reaction.
    Submerged in the acidic electrolyte tank, direct electric current drives oxygen ions into the aluminum, creating a durable, porous oxide layer.
  4. Coloring / Dyeing:
    Optional Finishing.
    The microscopic pores created during anodizing can absorb organic dyes or metallic salts to achieve permanent colors such as black, bronze, gold, or red.
  5. Sealing:
    Final Protection.
    The aluminum is treated in boiling deionized water or a nickel acetate solution. This hydrates the oxide layer, closing the pores to lock in colors and maximize corrosion and wear resistance.

Step-by-Step Powder Coating Process

  1. Pre-processing on shelves Before production and framing, the appearance quality of the profiles mube carefully checked.
  2. Spraying and Racking – Clean gloves and sleeves should be worm when putting on shelves(in summer). – Ensure the rack s have good electrical conductivity,clean and repair the rack in time and use appropriate rack when putting on the shelves to ensure product production quality. – Carefully check the suface quality of the profiles and pick out unqualified profiles. – Reworked materials and profiles with special requirements should be treated specially.

  4. Blowing dust before spraying – Wear clean gloves,first blow and then wipe from top to bottom. Be sure to remove dust,oil and residual moisture on the surface of the profile. – Check whether the profiles are hung well and stably. and whether the hanging angle is the same direction,be consisten.
  5. Degreasing and Rinsing

    Start the profiles during the water washing process so that the bath liquid remaining in the workplace is washed away by water.

    Dry off the liquid about 1-3 minutes.

  6. Powder Spraying Check all the equipment in the spraying process is opperating normally, and whether the fluidazation barrel, powder pipe, spray gun, recovery system and powder room are clean.
  7. Curring Oven Temperature: Heated to 180°C – 200°C (356°F – 392°F).

    Time: Baked for 10 to 20 minutes (depending on the aluminum’s thickness and the specific powder formulation).

    Cross-Linking: Inside the oven, the powder melts, flows into a smooth liquid layer, and undergoes a chemical cross-linking reaction to permanently bond and harden into a solid protective shell.

  8. Cooling & Quality Control Film Thickness Check: Typically targeted at 60–80 microns.

    Adhesion Test: Cross-hatch tape test to verify mechanical bond strength.

    Visual Inspection: Checking for surface defects like orange peel, pinholes, color consistency, and gloss level.
