Aluminium offers excellent formability, allowing it to be easily shaped and fabricated into various designs without compromising strength ideal for custom and complex applications.
Bring design to us and we can turn your ideas into precise, high-quality aluminium solutions. Custom sizes, specification and finishing tailored to your project needs.
An aluminium square hollow, listed on American order forms as a square tube, is the closed box profile with all four sides equal: one dimension, one wall thickness, and a section that behaves identically whichever way you turn it. That symmetry is not a footnote. It is the reason square tubes dominate visible frames, furniture, and any structure designed faster than it is calculated. We extrude square hollow sections at our facility in Indonesia in 6063 and 6061, from 15 × 15 mm finger-sized tube to 100 × 100 mm structural posts.
This is one of the genuinely split names in the catalogue, beyond spelling. The UK, Australia, Canada, and Europe say square hollow, or write SHS, square hollow section, on structural drawings. The United States says square tubes or square tubing, and an American enquiry will rarely use the word hollow at all. Box section floats through fabrication shops in both markets, and the aluminium versus aluminum split runs underneath everything as usual.
Same die, same extrusion, two vocabularies. A square hollow quoted in London and a square tube quoted in Texas are the same bar on the same pallet, and we read both names as one product.
The cross-section is a closed square: side A by side A, a constant wall, and a small external corner radius straight from the die. A 40 × 40 × 2 mm square hollow gives you four identical 40 mm faces and 2 mm of wall the whole way round. Extruded from a single billet through a porthole die, the section carries no welded seam, and its corners take anodising and powder coat evenly where a folded box would crack its coating at the bend.
Here is what separates a square tube from its rectangular sibling, and it is a feature, not a compromise. A rectangular hollow demands a decision: which way does the deep face point? Get it wrong and the member gives up most of its stiffness. A square hollow has no wrong way. Bending stiffness is identical about both axes, every face is a fixing face, and every orientation is the right orientation.
Our position: when the load direction is mixed, unknown, or simply not worth engineering, the square tube is the honest default. Frames get assembled by people, not by load diagrams, and a profile that cannot be installed backwards removes an entire category of site error. When the load clearly runs one way, the directional profile on our Rectangular Hollow page does the same job with less metal.
Square hollows carry one fabrication bonus that rarely appears on a datasheet. Cut any face at 45 degrees and it meets its neighbour perfectly, because every face is the same width. Picture frames, display plinths, table bases, and door frames in square tube close their corners with clean mitres in any plane, no offcut maths, no handed parts. The same joint in rectangular section needs matched orientations and two different mitre widths. For workshops building visible frames, that one property pays for itself in saved setup time every single day.

Square hollow sizes outside this table, and non-standard walls, can be extruded from the die library or from a custom die against your drawing.
The catalogue's standing split applies to square tubes unchanged. 6063-T5, yielding near 145 MPa, is the furniture and frame alloy: it extrudes thin walls cleanly and anodises evenly across all four faces. 6061-T6, near 240 MPa, belongs in posts, columns, and frames that carry calculated load. For visible structural work, the question answers itself: specify 6061 and finish it anyway, because a square hollow on show is doing two jobs and should be specified for both.
The three service levels run as they do across our range. Cut-to-size square hollow ships from stock dies against your cutting list, square-ended and deburred. The die library covers in-between sizes and heavier walls. And a custom die can add what the standard square tube lacks: internal screw bosses for end caps, a single T-slot face for fixings, or asymmetric walls where one face takes the screws and the others stay slim.
Send the cutting list, the frame drawing, or just the size and duty, and our team will reply with an alloy recommendation, price, and lead time from our factory and warehouse in Indonesia. Request a sample length first if you want the square tube in hand before the order runs.
