Understanding Round Bars Aluminium

An aluminium round bar is a solid cylinder of extruded metal, and that solidity is the whole specification. Where a round tube is chosen for what it leaves out, a round bar is chosen for what it keeps in: a continuous cross-section that can be turned, threaded, drilled through its centre, and loaded in compression without a wall to buckle. We extrude round bars at our facility in Indonesia in 6063 and 6061, for the lathe and for the structure alike.

What a Round Bar Is

The cross-section is a full circle, specified by a single number: the diameter. A 25 mm round bar is 25 mm of solid aluminium, end to end, supplied in 6 m lengths as standard.

Worth stating plainly because the confusion is common: a round bar is solid, a round tube is hollow. If your drawing shows a wall thickness, you are looking at a tube and our tubing page is where that order belongs. If it shows one diameter and nothing else, you are here for the right product.

Round Bar or Machine Rod? What Each Market Means

This is one of the few profiles where the British and American names carry different shades of meaning, not just different spelling.

In the United States, round bar covers everything: structural posts, spacer stock, and lathe material all answer to the same name. In the UK and Australia, you will meet machine rod alongside round bar, and the distinction is intent. Machine rod signals machining-grade stock, bought to be turned down to a finished component. Round bar leans structural, bought to be used close to its as-extruded size. The extrusion can be identical; the expectation is not. Tell us which use you have in mind and the quotation will reflect it, in temper, tolerance, and any machining allowance.

The metal's spelling follows the usual split: aluminium in the UK, Australia, Canada, and Europe, aluminum in the US.

Buying for the Lathe: Two Decisions Before You Order

First, the temper. 6061-T6 machines noticeably better than softer tempers: the harder material breaks chips cleanly instead of smearing, which means better surface finish and less tool gumming. If the bar's destiny is the lathe, T6 is our standing recommendation.

Second, the allowance. If you will machine the outside diameter anyway, paying for a tight as-extruded tolerance is money spent twice. Order the bar with 0.5 to 1 mm of machining allowance over the finished diameter and let the lathe establish the precision. The reverse also holds: if the as-extruded surface is the finished surface, as on a spacer or a rail, say so, and we will hold the extrusion to suit.

That single conversation, machined or as-extruded, is the difference between a bar that fits the job and a bar that fits the catalogue.

Where Round Bars Carry the Load

  • Structural supports and posts, where solid section means no wall to dent and full strength at every fastener.
  • Machined components: shafts, standoffs, bushes, pins, and threaded parts turned from rod.
  • Load-bearing pins and axles in light-duty assemblies, jigs, and fixtures.
  • Precision spacers, faced to length where consistent solid stock matters more than weight.

The recurring theme is load. A round bar earns its extra weight over a tube wherever the load is concentrated, the section is small, or the part will be cut into from the outside.

Diameters outside this range can be quoted from the die library or tooled as a custom die. A solid square section is also available; ask for square bar against the same service.

Choosing the Alloy

The split holds steady across our catalogue. 6063-T5, yielding near 145 MPa, suits architectural and decorative rod where the surface will be anodised and the loads are modest. 6061-T6, near 240 MPa, is the bar for structure and for the lathe. When a bar does both jobs, carries load and gets machined, 6061-T6 answers both questions at once, which is why it accounts for most of the round bar we ship.

Round Bars Cut to Length from Indonesia

Round bar is a cutting-service product by nature: most components start as a short billet, not a 6 m length. Send a cutting list and the bars arrive faced to length, deburred, ready for the chuck. Non-standard diameters come from the die library, and custom solid profiles from a new die against your drawing.

Send the drawing, the cutting list, or just the finished diameter and the duty, and our team will reply with temper, allowance, price, and lead time from our factory and warehouse in Indonesia. For solid stock in a flat section, the companion profile lives on our Flat Bar page.
